Language classrooms are thinking classrooms

Let’s engage our students in thinking deeply about things that matter in the world.

I offer workshops on Content-based Language Instruction for Teachers of Languages

I have presented workshops on Content-based Language instruction for university language department faculty in India as well as the United States. I work as an Instructional Coach supporting language teachers in designing and implementing inquiry-based language curriculum.

I offer workshops on Content-based Language Instruction for Teachers of Languages…

I have presented workshops on Content-based Language instruction for university language department faculty with great success. I am thrilled to be presenting a half-day workshop on “Designing Inquiry-based Instruction using Authentic Resources” at the 2024 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I can design workshops tailored to the needs of your faculty. Below are some possibilities…

Designing Curriculum around Authentic Materials

This workshop will focus on how to integrate the use of authentic materials and design units of instruction centered around specific topic-related texts (articles, visual materials, audio materials). Participants will learn how to choose appropriate texts and design scaffolding activities for students to be able to access complex texts. We will learn how to apply an Experiential learning model to the materials that we use.

Language Classrooms are Thinking Classrooms

The skill of thinking deeply around content can and should be an integral part of a language classroom. This workshop focuses on how to integrate higher order thinking skills into your language curriculum so that students are learning both language and content through inductive reasoning. Participants will learn how to create tasks and activities that lead students to investigate, reason and form well-informed opinions around content while also adopting an inquiry stance around the learning of language.

Deeper Learning in the Language Classroom

How can we create experiences for students that lead to learning that lasts? This is learning that students will take from the classroom and be able to apply to different situations and contexts in the real world. What does this look like in a language classroom? This workshop will introduce the pillars of deeper learning in a language classroom and give teachers the tools they need to ensure that their students leave their classrooms with language proficiency and enduring understandings.

Culture as Central to the Language Classroom

This workshop will focus on how to make relevant cultural topics the focus of instruction. Participants will learn how to choose authentic cultural materials and design activities that will lead students to look at difference with curiosity and a desire to participate in the world with cultural competence. An important aspect of cultural studies is the study of one’s own cultural values and beliefs. Teachers will learn how to integrate processes that help students reflect on cultural perspectives in both their own as well as the target culture.

I am very grateful for the workshop that really opened up new ways of developing curriculum for language teaching.
